The Diary Files · from the Closet Conversations series
There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over you when you stand in front of your closet at the turn of a season. The air is different. The light is different. And if you’re honest, you can feel it — something in you is different too.
Every fall, I do what I call the seasonal edit. I take a slow afternoon, pull the pieces forward, and I ask each one a simple question: does this still look like the woman I’m becoming?
Not the woman I was last year. Not the woman someone else thinks I should be. The woman I see myself becoming.
Years ago, I started making my own clothes for one reason — I didn’t want anyone else wearing what I wore. That was my first edit, though I didn’t have the words for it then. I was deciding, piece by piece, that my image would be mine. Nobody else’s. That instinct never left me; it just grew up. Now I teach it.
Here’s what the seasonal edit actually looks like, if you want to try it:
First, pull your fall pieces out where you can see them. All of them. Don’t organize yet — just look. Then hold each piece up and ask three questions. Does it fit the life I’m living right now? Does it fit the woman I’m becoming? And does it make me feel like myself when I put it on? If a piece can’t answer yes to at least two of those, thank it and let it go. Someone else’s becoming might be hanging in your closet, and that’s a heavy thing to carry into a new season.
What stays should feel like intention. A coat that makes you stand taller. Boots that make you walk like you mean it. The sweater in exactly your shade that reminds you who you are when the days get shorter and the world gets louder.
Here’s the part nobody tells you about changing seasons: they change whether you prepare or not. October comes regardless. The only question is whether you meet it on purpose or let it happen to you. Preparation is dignity. It’s you saying, before the world gets a vote, this is who I am and this is how I intend to show up.
So this week, open the closet. Not to shop, not to stress — to converse. Your closet has been listening to you longer than most people have. Let it tell you what it knows.
Be yourself. Never compare, never compete. There is only one you, and no season ever made a copy.
